Creating a View

Contents

Creating a new view takes a few seconds—you give it a name, choose what it shows, and optionally set filters. After that, it stays in the sidebar permanently.

Getting to the View Editor

Sidebar › Views tab › Footer › View

On iPhone, tap + in the Views tab. The view editor opens in its own window.

Step by Step

  1. In the Views tab, click View at the bottom.
  2. Give the view a name—it appears in the sidebar later. Next to it, you can optionally choose an icon and a color; below it, there’s room for a description.
  3. Set the content type: tasks (default), projects, or milestones. (Details in Content Type.) Project and milestone views have their own, shorter configuration—the following steps apply to task views.
  4. Choose a layout—that is, how the results are displayed (List, Table, Board, Agenda, Calendar, Multi-View, Dashboard). Depending on the layout, more options appear below it. (Details in View Types.)
  5. Under Actions, choose whether to include the Inbox and show project context, whether only the next action appears, and which fields the rows show. (Details in Display Options.)
  6. Set up the filter—in Simple mode with Quick Setup, in Advanced mode with your own rules. (Details in Understanding Filter Rules.)
  7. Set the sorting and grouping. (Details in Sorting and Grouping.)
  8. Save the view with the checkmark at the top right (on iPhone, Create).

The view then appears in the Views tab of the sidebar and is ready to use.

Simple Mode vs. Advanced Mode

At the very top of the editor, you switch between two modes:

Simple—Under Quick Setup, you choose a preset: Today, Overdue, Waiting, or Active. Below that, you can adjust which tasks are shown and how they’re grouped and sorted. For many everyday views, that’s all you need.

Advanced—You build your own filter rules with any fields, operators, and values, combine them into groups, and split the view into several sections if needed.

You’ll find a complete explanation of both modes in Understanding Filter Rules. Board, Multi-View, and Dashboard have no mode switch: The board comes with its own simple filter; Multi-View and Dashboard filter through their columns or cells.

Start with simple mode. Most views can be configured with it in seconds. Switching to Advanced carries everything over. If you switch back and the configuration can’t be fully represented there, TandemLoop asks first.

Editing a View Later

To open an existing view, right-click it in the sidebar and choose Edit… (iPad: the ⋯ button at the end of the row). All settings can be changed at any time; they take effect as soon as you save with the checkmark.
