The View System

Sorting

Contents

TandemLoop lets you control exactly in which order tasks appear in a view—either with fixed rules or by hand.

In Simple mode, you choose one of five sort options (Due Date, Do Date, Created, Modified, or Manual). In Advanced mode, you switch per section under Sorting between Manual and Rules.

Multi-Field Sorting

With Add Sort, you set up several rules in a row. The app applies them in order: If two tasks are identical for the first criterion, the second decides, then the third, and so on. A typical example: first by due date (ascending), then alphabetically by title.

For each rule, you set:

Setting Options Meaning
Sort Field Title, Status, Assigned To, Delegation, Due Date, Do Date, Completed On, Created, Modified, Order, Days Until Due, Project, Milestone, Area, and custom attributes What to sort by
Direction ascending / descending A → Z or early → late, or the other way around
Empty Values Empty Last (default) / Empty First Where tasks without this value end up—regardless of the direction

Tip—Choose Empty First if you want to see tasks without a due date at the very top—that way they’re sure to catch your eye.

Meaningful Order for Status Fields

For some fields, TandemLoop uses a fixed order instead of alphabetical sorting, so that ascending always means the most sensible order:

Field Ascending order
Status (tasks) Active → Question → For Review → Waiting → Completed → Dropped (On Hold and Someday after that)
Status (projects / milestones) Active → Waiting → On Hold → Someday → Completed → Dropped
Assigned To Human → AI
Delegation Do → Draft → Ask

This means: When you sort a view by status in ascending order, active tasks are always at the very top.

Manual Sorting

Choose Manual to set the order yourself. You can then move tasks in the list with drag and drop within a group. The app saves your arrangement in the view and restores it the next time you open it.

Good to know—Manual sorting works within a group. Tasks you haven’t positioned manually yet appear after the arranged ones in their previous order. If you later switch to Rules, the manual arrangement stays saved in the view and applies again as soon as you switch back to Manual.
