Drag and drop is the fastest way to restructure items without clicking through menus. You drag an item to a new position or into a new context—the app responds immediately.
What Can Go Where
| What you drag | Possible destinations |
|---|---|
| Task | Project, milestone, area or folder (as a standalone task), Inbox; also reordering within the same list |
| Project | Folder (move into a folder or take it out), another area, reordering within the same level |
| Folder | Another area, reordering within the same area |
| Area | Reordering in the sidebar |
| Milestone | Another project, reordering within the same project |
| Multi-View column | Reordering (drag by the column header) |
| Dashboard tile | Reordering or swapping with another tile |
Reordering vs. Moving
While you drag, the app shows what happens when you let go:
- Reorder: You hold the item above or below another item on the same level. A horizontal line shows where it will be inserted—before or after the target item.
- Move (drop into a target): You hold the item over a container (for example, a project or milestone). The target is highlighted—when you let go, the item is moved into the target.
Optimistic update—The interface shows the new order immediately, even before the file is written. If an error occurs, the previous state is restored.
Retagging by Dragging Between Tag Sections
If a view has several sections whose filters each check exactly one tag (for example, “Prio 1”, “Prio 2”), you can retag tasks, projects, and milestones by dragging them from one section to another: the old section’s tag is removed and the target section’s tag is set; other tags stay untouched. You can only drag items that carry the tag themselves—not ones that merely inherit it from the project.
Tip—Create one section for each of your priority tags to move tasks between them quickly.
Restrictions
Not every combination is allowed. While you drag, the app shows only valid destinations—invalid drop areas don’t respond. A few examples:
- Milestones can be reordered only within the same project; into another project, they’re moved (not reordered).
- Folders can’t be moved into another folder, only between areas or reordered within an area.
With Other Apps
Drag and drop also works across app boundaries:
- Out of TandemLoop: If you drag a task (from the list, board, agenda, or calendar) into another app, its title arrives there as text—for example, in Notes, Mail, or a text field. On the Mac, the task also provides its Markdown file: the Finder creates a copy of the file, and editors open it directly. Projects, milestones, folders, and areas provide their name as text.
- Into TandemLoop: If you drag text or a link from
another app onto the Inbox—the Inbox row in the sidebar
or the open Inbox list—a new task is created from it. The first
line becomes the title; additional text and a link go into the
notes. A link on its own becomes a readable title (for
example,
example.com/article) and is also added to the notes.
Good to know—A link you drag into the Inbox isn’t fetched; TandemLoop only takes the address. Internal drags (reordering, moving) aren’t affected by this.
Views: Date and Column by Dragging
In a Board, you drag a card into another column and thereby change its status, assignment, or delegation (only the AI agent sets the For Review and Question columns). In Agenda and Calendar, dropping onto another section or day sets a new due date (in Agenda, you can turn this off); a time is kept.
iPad and iPhone
On iPad, you drag by touching and holding until the item lifts out of the list. Then you move it to the destination and lift your finger. On iPhone, you move tasks with Move To… in the context menu.
