Folders

Contents

Folders are an optional intermediate level within an area. You use them when you want to group several projects by topic—for example, all client projects in a “Clients” folder in the “Work” area.

What Is a Folder?

A folder sits directly below an area and contains projects and, optionally, standalone tasks. It’s flat—folders can’t be nested inside each other. So there’s at most one folder level per area.

Area (e.g., “Work”)
│
├── Folder (e.g., “Clients”)
│ ├── Project (e.g., “Website Relaunch”)
│ └── Project (e.g., “Annual Report”)
│
└── Project (without a folder, directly in the area)

Folders exist only at the level directly below an area.

Creating a Folder

You create new folders from an area’s context menu or—with the area open—with the Folder button in the toolbar.

Sidebar › Right-click area › New Folder…

On iPad, you reach the menu with the ⋯ button at the end of the row.

Properties of a Folder

The properties dialog opens from the folder’s context menu.

Sidebar › Right-click folder › Properties…

Property Meaning
Name Display name of the folder.
Show standalone tasks Shows the folder’s Standalone Tasks entry even when it currently has no open standalone tasks.

Color and icon aren’t available for folders—these options exist only at the area level.

Renaming a Folder

Right-click the folder › Rename—the name becomes editable right in the sidebar; ↩︎ confirms, ⎋ cancels. Alternatively, use Properties….

Order and Moving

Folders share the ordering with the projects of the area—you can sort folders and projects at the area level together with drag and drop.

To move a folder to another area, drag it onto the destination area in the sidebar.

Deleting a Folder

Sidebar › Right-click folder › Delete

Deleting a folder doesn’t delete its contents. Instead, all projects and standalone tasks it contains are moved up to the area level—they’re kept, but afterward they belong directly to the area instead of the folder. The empty folder is then removed.

The confirmation dialog states both: On the Mac, the folder itself goes to the Trash (on iPad and iPhone, it’s deleted), and its projects and standalone tasks move up to the area level.

Creating Projects in a Folder

You add new projects to a folder from the folder’s context menu.

Sidebar › Right-click folder › New Project

You can drag existing projects into a folder with drag and drop, or move them out of a folder directly into the area.
