TandemLoop organizes your work in a clear tree structure: from the big area of your life down to the individual task. Once you’ve internalized these five levels, you’ll find your way around everywhere in the app.
The Five Levels
At the very top are areas—the big areas of your life and work. They contain projects, optionally grouped in folders. A project can be divided into milestones, and at the very bottom you do the actual work in tasks.
Area (e.g., “Work”)
│
├── Folder (optional, e.g., “Clients”)
│ └── Project (e.g., “Website Relaunch”)
│ ├── Milestone (e.g., “Concept”)
│ │ └── Task
│ └── Task (directly in the project)
│
├── Project (also possible without a folder)
│
└── Standalone task (task directly in the area, without a project)
From top to bottom: area › folder › project › milestone › task.
There’s also the Inbox—a quick collection point that sits outside this hierarchy. You sort everything you capture there into an area or a project later.
What Each Level Means
| Level | What it stands for | Contains |
|---|---|---|
| Area | A big area of life or work (Work, Personal, Sports, and so on) | Folders, projects, standalone tasks |
| Folder | An optional subgroup for grouping projects | Projects, standalone tasks |
| Project | A focused undertaking with several tasks | Milestones, tasks |
| Milestone | A phase or interim goal in the project | Tasks |
| Task | The atomic unit of work—what you check off | – |
A project always belongs to exactly one area. Optionally, it also sits in a folder of that area. You can move it at any time later with drag and drop.
Where You See the Hierarchy
The complete structure lives in the sidebar on the left. You expand and collapse areas and folders with the small arrow (chevron) and navigate through your entire tree this way.

Flexible Depth—Use Only What You Need
You don’t have to use every level. Some areas get by without any folders, many projects don’t need milestones, and for quick one-off tasks there are standalone tasks directly in the area.
Start simple. One area, one project, and a few tasks are enough to get started. You can add folders and milestones at any time as a project grows.
You’ll get to know the individual levels in detail in the following chapters: Areas, Folders, Projects, Milestones, and Tasks. The chapter Inbox & Quick Entry shows how to capture something in a flash without worrying about where it goes.
