If you already work with an AI tool in a particular project—such as a code repository—you don’t have to tell your agent the path to the data folder every time. Instead, you create a link to your TandemLoop data folder in the project folder. The agent then finds your shared task base right “next to” the code.
Why Link?
Your AI tool usually works in a fixed working directory (the project
folder). A symbolic link (symlink) brings your data
folder there as a subfolder—without copying the files. This way you can
note in your project’s CLAUDE.md or AGENTS.md:
“For tasks, read the AGENTS.md in the linked folder.” The
agent then reads the rules from there and works with your TandemLoop
tasks while also working on the project itself.
Step 1: Find the Path to the Data Folder
Settings › Data Folder › Read the path (or “Open in Finder”)
Step 2: Create the Symlink
Run one of these commands in the project folder.
Replace <DATA-FOLDER-PATH> with the path from step 1.
Here, the link is called tandemloop:
macOS / Linux:
ln -s "<DATA-FOLDER-PATH>" tandemloop
Windows (PowerShell):
New-Item -ItemType SymbolicLink -Name tandemloop -Target "<DATA-FOLDER-PATH>"
Don’t commit the data folder to the repo. If your
project is in Git, add the link to .gitignore so the
contents of the data folder don’t accidentally become part of the
repository:
echo "tandemloop" >> .gitignore
Step 3: Point the Agent to It
Add a short section to your project’s CLAUDE.md or
AGENTS.md. Template to copy:
## Tasks & Project Management (TandemLoop)
Tasks, projects, and their status are managed in TandemLoop. The data folder is
linked into this project as `./tandemloop`. When you want to read, create, or
edit tasks or change their status, first read `./tandemloop/AGENTS.md`
and strictly follow the rules there.
From now on, a note in the project such as “Check TandemLoop for open tasks” is enough—the agent follows the link and the ground rules there.
All in One Step: Let a Prompt Do It
You can also have your AI tool take care of steps 2 and 3. Copy this prompt, replace the path, and give it to your agent—you’ll also find it, with the path already filled in, at the end of the Agent Tutorial (Mac):
In this project folder, create a symbolic link named `tandemloop` that points
to my TandemLoop data folder: <DATA-FOLDER-PATH>. If this is a Git repo, add
`tandemloop` to .gitignore. Then add a section to this project's AGENTS.md
(or CLAUDE.md) that instructs you to first read `./tandemloop/AGENTS.md` for
task and project management and to follow its rules.
Several projects, one data folder. You can create such a link to the same data folder in as many project folders as you like. This way, all your AI projects access the same task base. Make sure, though, that several agents don’t write at the same time—see Working Together Autonomously & Continuously.
You can find the complete write rules for agents in Working with AI Agents.
